Tanzania Marine Parks and Reserves Authority was established under the Marine Parks reserve Act Number 29 of 1994. This authority is being managed by the board of Trustees, whose main objective is to supervise the management and administer our national marine parks for sustainable use. The main purpose of establishing the board of trustees is to provide comprehensive coverage research capability and offer more opportunities to those wishing to join the marine park team and conduct their own research for marine resources. Tanzania is rich in terms of marine parks; it has a large number of these parks within the coastline of Tanzania mainland, in Zanzibar Island, along its great Lakes and Rivers.
To the eastern side, Tanzania is being covered with the endless Indian Ocean coastline of about 1,424 km (500 miles), i.e. from Tanga to Mtwara regions. The Tanzania coastline have a large number of secured, clean, and unspoiled beaches, that contain classic and luxurious tourism products like the ordinary and first class resort style beaches and hotels, within and outside the Ocean. Most of our beaches, especially those from Zanzibar, Pemba, and Mafia offer the best places for diving and snorkeling sea sports in the world. This includes famous Zanzibar Archipelago of Islands, both containing many wildlife and a unique ecosystems along the beaches.
Dar es Salaam region, the major business city of Tanzania, has a number of attracting and famous Marine parks that are located within its coastline.
- Bongoyo Island Marine Reserve
- Mbudya Island Marine Reserve
- Pangani Island Marine Reserve
- Funguyasini Marine Reserve
Other marine parks on the coastline of Tanzania mainland includes;
- The Maziwi Island Reserves located in Pangani district (Tanga region)
- Mafia Marine Park located in Coast Region and
- Mnazi Bay reserve which is located in Mtwara Region
We also include all the marine parks and reserved areas in both Lakes & rivers found in Tanzania Mainland.
In Zanzibar Islands, the marine reserve area includes;
- Chumbe Island marine parks
- Misali conservation Area
Visit these parks and experience attractive deep sea water sports and also Sharks and Dolphins watching. It is common to see Sharks and Dolphins in this area.
